What can a Tile Removal handyman do?

A tile remover will generally be experienced in removing tiles from floors and walls. Where only a few tiles are being removed, the tiler/handyman will take extra care to not to damage or dislodged surrounding tiles. This might require doing some grout removal or tile cutting to get the desired result.

Where an entire surface requires tiles removed, the tiler’s aim will generally be to leave the surface in a good clean condition so it can accept a new material like plaster, wood or new tiles. Removing tiles and preparing the surface may need chiseling, scraping and grinding tools and machines. If there is a lot of waste then he or she may be happy to remove and safely dump the waste for you.

Tile Removal FAQs

Can tiles be removed without damaging the tile?

If you try to remove stone and ceramic tiles, expect that the tiles will most likely break or get damaged in the process. Tiles get firmly installed onto substrates using strong adhesives and are not supposed to be removed easily. You can use a chisel or pry bar to lift tiles but the force expelled in the process will generally break the tile when attempting to lift them. However, with care and attention, you may find that some of the tiles will come off fully intact. Unlike stone tiles, carpet tiles don't crack so can usually be removed without any damage. If you plan to reuse any pre-used tiles then you’ll need to scrape off the adhesive and grout stuck to them.

Can I remove tiles myself?

Tile removal can be completed by most people who are “handy”, have the right tools and aren’t afraid of a bit of hard work. Using the right chiseling tool is key to simplifying and getting the best results. While tiles can be removed using a hand chisel, pry bar and hammer, a powered chisel drill will make light work of most tiles. Once the tiles are removed you might need to remove the adhesive from the floor or wall surface with a scraping or grinding tool. Again, depending on the size of the area you are removing the adhesive from you might choose to get a power tool like a grinder to speed up the process.

How long does it take to remove tiles?

Tiles can be removed relatively quickly when using the right tools. Using an appropriate power chisel will make light work of lifting tiles. You might find that it takes more time to clean the exposed surface than actually lifting the tiles themselves. This is because the exposed surface will still have adhesive and dirt on it. If you are installing new tiles or flooring over this surface it needs to be clean and level and this can take some time to get right.

Will removing tiles damage the wall?

In certain cases you might risk damaging the wall or floor by removing tiles. Especially if the wall or floor is made of plasterboard or wood. If the tile adhesive is fixed strongly to the plasterboard or wood then these surfaces may lift with the tile. Concrete walls and floors are unlikely to get damaged to the extent that they need any repairs. With plasterboard and wood boards though it’s worth factoring in the cost or replacing or repairing these when removing tiles.

How do I know if the tile remover will be good?

If you want to get an idea of how good a person’s work is on TaskMatch then simply look at their work history and reviews. A tile remover would have lots of general handyman knowledge and experience. This might include installing tiles and demolition work. For best results a tile remover will use appropriate tools like a chisel drill and pry bar. You can always talk to the Tasker about their experience before hiring on TaskMatch.
