What can a Wallpaper Installer do?

Many homeowners try to hang wallpaper themselves. While it may look easy, Wallpaper Hangers come equipped with the skills, experience, and tools necessary for taking on such a task. Before starting they can prep the wall to accept wallpaper. Prepping might include removing material from the wall surface, priming or simply cleaning it. They’ll know the best way to hang vinyl, non-woven or textured wallpapers, and they’ll decide on whether it’s best to use the ‘paste the wall’ or ‘paste the paper’ method. Cutting, measuring and making sure your patterns perfectly align, the Wallpaper Installer takes the hassle out of interior design.

A Wallpaper Installer can also help remove old wallpaper. This might be done using a steamer or wallpaper removal solution to loosen the old paper. Then they can scrape off any old paper with a scraping knife. Where there is any damage to the wall they may be able to help path and repair it. The end result should be a smooth clean wall surface that can be plastered, painted on or ready to accept new wallpaper.

Wallpapering FAQs

Will I need to supply all the wallpapering materials?

This is something you can agree with your Tasker on TaskMatch before starting any work. You may have already sourced the adhesive and paper, so make sure and let the Tasker know before you agree on a price for the job. Alternatively you might prefer that the Tasker sources materials that they recommend using.

What kind of tools are used for wallpapering?

Some of the tools you will see a Wallpapering Installer use are a drop cloth to protect the floor and catch any messes, a step ladder to reach those tricky high spots, a paste brush for seamless application, a plumb line to make sure the paper is even, and a good blade to cut it to size. If they’re using the ‘paste the paper’ method they’ll bring a wallpaper table to lay out the strips and a scorer to create holes in the surface of the paper for better absorption of water and adhesive.

Can I wallpaper over old wallpaper?

This will depend on the kind of wallpaper you currently have. Vinyl wallpaper is non-porous, meaning new wallpaper won’t stick to it. But in most cases, other non-coated papers can be papered over. If the wallpaper is textured then be careful papering over this as the old texture patterns may show through the new paper.

Which kind of wallpaper should I choose?

There are many wallpaper options available to you. Aesthetic considerations aside, choosing the right wallpaper for a space means thinking about who uses the room and how busy it is. For high-footfall areas like a hallway or kitchen, a delicate textured wallpaper like a silk will most likely be the wrong choice, but this could work beautifully for a feature panel in a master bedroom. If you have young children or pets, non-vinyl is the way to go. It can be wiped down with a sponge meaning you don’t have to worry about sticky hands or grubby paws.

Do I need to prepare my walls for wallpapering?

Not all surfaces can accept wallpaper directly. In order for wallpaper glue to adhere to a surface properly the surface needs to be both clean and smooth. Wiping down walls with sugar soap is a great way to clean off dirt and grease. Remove any nails or screws in the wall. If the wall is plastered and has imperfections it might be worthwhile sanding out any bumps or filling any holes. If the surface has an oil based or glossy paint on it, is newly plastered or is naked plasterboard then you will need to install a priming solution/paint to the wall.
