TaskMatch is Ireland’s biggest marketplace for people to outsource tasks, find local services, or hire workers in minutes
A Floor Fitter in Ireland will install (or lay) all types of laminate, solid wood or semi solid wood floors. While the majority of a Floor Fitter’s jobs will involve wood type floors they may also be experienced in installing lino and carpet floors. At the start of a project, a Floor Fitter will be able to survey the room to calculate the amount of flooring materials needed as well as the suitability of the sub floor. If there is an existing floor in place then your fitter may or may not offer a removal service. Where subfloor repairs are needed they may be able to help level or improve the integrity of the sub floor for it to accept the finished floor. The fitter can install the planks and underlay if required. Planks will either be glued to the subfloor or joined together and left floating. Floor Fitters will install trims, door saddles and thresholds at the ends of the floor where it runs into a new floor surface. Solid and semi solid floors will require treatments like oiling or waxing once fitted and throughout their lifespan. This maintenance along with sanding, staining and repairing of any damaged boards can be completed by your Floor Fitter.

The average rate for Laminate and vinyl floors is €20-€30 per square metre. Solid and semi solid floors range from €30-€60 per square metre. Parquet wood floors are generally more labour intensive to install and require more skill and accuracy, so do expect to pay more here. Flooring trickier surfaces like stairs may also result in additional costs. Factor in any extras like skirting board installation, trims and thresholds installed. That said, the average household floor fitting will probably work out as starting from around €20-€40 per square metre.
Get quotes from Floor Fitters in your areaOne thing that has always been said about natural wooden floors is that they will never go out of style. Whether you are living in a countryside cottage or a skyrise apartment, there is no comparison to the added warmth and aesthetic impact they have on a home. Natural wooden flooring prices in Ireland mean that, at minimum, a natural wood floor will be twice the price of the laminate / vinyl alternative. Both solid and even engineered natural wood floors will require maintenance in the form of re-oiling, waxing or varnishing the surface every few years. So if the extra price is within budget and you are willing to upkeep the floor, a natural floor can last a lifetime and can add value to your home.
Everyone will have a different preference on how many different kinds of flooring should be in the one home. While many people opt for a design that flows from one room to another, others try to stick to the “rule of three” that advises having no more than three different kinds of flooring in your entire home.
Floor Fitters will generally not have their own stock of wood flooring, but will have the tools and expertise to properly fit it into your home. They will also be able to tell you exactly how much flooring you need based on the measurements they take. If you are having trouble deciding what material to get or where to get it from, speak to them about the suppliers in Ireland they have worked with before.
When getting quotes for floor installation make sure and get accurate room measurements. A fitter can help with this if needed. Avoid giving the fitter extra work by clearing the room and preparing the floor surface. This might include removing any old flooring and cleaning down the subfloor. Receiving quotes for laying floors on TaskMatch is free so we advise you to get 3 or more quotes from our Taskers to ensure you get a rate that you are happy with.
Once the room is cleared, skirting removed and the subfloor is ready to receive the new floor then you can start installing. Laminate floating floors can be installed relatively quickly as they often “click” together and don't require glueing. A standard size 3 x 3 metre room could be floored in around 2 hours. Non floating floors are floors that are glued to the subfloor and these can take more work and time. Herringbone parquet wood floors are some of the most labour intensive and will take about an hour per 1-2 square metres.
First calculate the square metres of the room by measuring the 2 widest points of the room and multiplying them together. If the room is an irregular shape you may have to visually break it into different rectangles and repeat the calculation process. Once you know the area of the room, you should follow the rule of adding 5-10% to the total. This is to allow for any mis-cuts and allow for more complete length boards to be installed.
